TL;DR

  • Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 8 starts at $1,199 in the U.S., up $100 from last year’s 256GB model.
  • The 512GB version has risen even more, costing $1,399, which is $180 more than the 512GB Galaxy Z Flip 7.
  • Unlike last year, Samsung is not offering a free storage upgrade during pre-orders.

The Galaxy Z Flip 8 is more expensive compared to its predecessor. Price has gone up by $100 in the United States but there's also a hidden price hike that you may not have noticed.

The “starting at” prices that are advertised only pertain to the base model which in this case is the 256GB model. There's also a 512GB model and its price has gone up by $180 compared to last year.

You're going to pay even more for higher internal storage

Samsung priced the 256GB Galaxy Z Flip 7 at $1,099 last year. A $100 increase has been made this year for the similar Galaxy Z Flip 8 which can now be yours for $1,199.

What some of you may have forgotten is that the 512GB Galaxy Z Flip 7 was launched at $1,219. The 512GB Galaxy Z Flip 8 costs $1,399, and for those who are good at mathematics, is a $180 increase.

Samsung may be taking a hit on the margins for the base model while trying to strike a balance with higher margins on the 512GB Galaxy Z Flip 8. It's not like customers don't opt for the higher storage. These phones don't have microSD cards and even 512GB isn't that much in this day and age.

Pre-order now

There's no free storage upgrade on offer during pre-orders this year like we saw last year when Samsung gave everyone who bought the 256GB Galaxy Z Flip 7 the 512GB variant for no extra charge. It just goes to show that how the current market dynamics are detrimental to customers' wallets.
